Performance Overview
While the CX-7 is not a true sports car (it’s way too large and tall), it’s far more sportier than its competitors such as the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. There’s minimal body lean when driving fast on winding road and the brakes reassuringly stop the crossover. There is some understeer when slamming a corner and torque steer when accelerating hard, but most drivers will rarely experience either in daily driving. Road noise is a bit more prominent than others in the same class.
Available Styles
The CX-7 comes in three trim levels, differing primarily in features and options. The Sports model is the base model. Touring and Grand Touring models differ by standard features. Options are available for all models though more limited for the Sports trim than the other two.
Engines
The CX-7 exclusively uses a 244-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder.
Transmissions
A six-speed automatic with a Sport shift feature is the only transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive optional.
Fuel Efficiency
Low for such an SUV. The CX-7 gets 18 mpg city driving, 24 mpg for high-way driving for FWD. Virtually no change for AWD version. Premium fuel is required.
Safety
Lots. The CX-7 includes frontal airbags; front seat-mounted side-impact airbags; front/rear side air curtains with extended inflation; and a fold-away brake pedal assembly. Anti-lock disc brakes and electronic stability control are standard.
Warranties
Starting with 2007, Mazda provides three year bumper-to-bumper warranty and five year powertrain warranty.
Cost
The CX-7 is priced at less than $24,000 to under $35,000 when fully optioned.
