Bonhams & Butterfields Auction Resounding Success

Carmel, Calif. - 20 August 2007 - Bonhams & Butterfields celebrated the tenth anniversary of its renowned motorcars auction at Quail Lodge on Friday, August 17th with resounding success.


Carmel, Calif. - 20 August 2007 - Bonhams & Butterfields celebrated the tenth anniversary of its renowned motorcars auction at Quail Lodge on Friday, August 17th with resounding success.

Having become an institution during the most famous collector car week in the world, Bonhams’ sale demonstrated once again why the 104-year-old auction house is a leader in the domain of collector cars. Comprising a very diverse and newsworthy selection, lots included premium roadsters, tourers, muscle cars and competition cars. Strong bidding from buyers in the crowded tent and via telephone from numerous locations among four continents resulted in the following highlights:

Jim Taylor, President and General Manager of Cadillac Motors, took the podium aside Bonhams & Butterfields CEO and auctioneer Malcolm Barber to say a few words prior to the offering of the world’s oldest known Cadillac, a 1903 Runabout that proceeded to sell for $337,000 to a private US buyer.

A classic brass era 1907 Packard Model 30 U-series Runabout sold for $403,000.

A local private collector paid $403,000 for a 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Regent Convertible Coupe. No stranger to Pebble Beach, this car has won awards here and at events across the country.

The very elegant and flamboyant 1935 Talbot-Lago T120 Drophead Coupe sold for $293,000 to a private European collector.

As is usual with Bonhams’ sale at The Quail, sports racing cars feature predominantly and a
1959 Cooper-Climax Monaco Mark I made $287,500 to a US racing enthusiast.

The two-time NCRS Top Flight Award-winning and Duntov Award-winning
1968 Chevrolet Corvette
L88 Coupe sold for $252,500.

A 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring coupe formerly in the collection of the late “LA Times” publisher Otis Chandler sold for $271,000.

Within the sale’s automobilia section, an original movie poster autographed by Steve McQueen, Robert Duvall, Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Vaughn for the Oscar-winning film “Bullitt” sold for $14,040.

A sterling silver Supermarine S.5 Schneider Trophy from 1927 sold to a European buyer for $40,950.

In all, Bonhams & Butterfields Auction of Important Collectors’
Motorcars & Memorabilia garnered nearly $9 million in total sales. Says Mark Osborne, VP of the Motoring Department at Bonhams & Butterfields, “This year’s sale was another great effort put forth by the International Motorcar Dept. The collector car market is showing strength and continued growth and we’re pleased with the results as well as encouraged for the near and distant future. Much excitement is in the works with noted collections coming to the block with Bonhams.”
