GM looking at possibility of merger with Nissan/Renault

A recent announcement from General Motors board member Kirk Kerkorian has confirmed rumors that the company is looking at the possibility of merging with Nissan/Renault.

The three automakers are interested in technology sharing and parts procurement. Nissan, for example, would like to have access to hybrid drivetrains that GM has developed for the Saturn VUE and Chevrolet Tahoe. All three believe costs could be reduced by buying components on a larger scale.

Is it possible we could see platform sharing as well? GM has never been very strong in the midsize or small car market while Nissan has tried to break into the full size truck market without much success. Could we see the next impala SS based off a rear-wheel drive Infiniti platform, or maybe the next Nissan Titan a rebadged Chevrolet Avalanche hybrid? This partnership is still in the research phase, but who knows what will happen down the road.

The question is: would Nissan be sharing its Nissan 350Z GT-S concept? I do see that this Nissan concept car really looks promising as a production vehicle.

And hey, with Nissan’s reliability dipping in the last few years, they might as well go whole hog and start sharing components with GM! Woohoo!
