Crazy Car Sightings

I was in the parking lot of a supermarket across from my place of work in Chicago, and was walking to my car which I randomly decided to park as far away from the automatic caution doors. I see a purple, low-slung coupe parked near my car, and immediately thought it was a heavily modified previous generation Celica but oh was I wrong. It just happened to be a Maserati Coupé Cambiocorsa, and the gentlemen who owned it was casually putting bags full of groceries in his trunk.

While trying to meet a friend/client in Maryland last weekend, I got lost and ended up in Bethesda — probably the most affluent area of the country I’ve ever visited. While driving down the main drag, I look over to my right and notice a BMW Z8 Alpina just rolling by. Uh, yeah, last time I checked less than 500 of these cars were ever brought to this country.

Less than 100 yards further down the road in Bethesda, I’m stopped at a stop light and see a black sedan approaching quickly from a distance. Immediately I think it’s a prototype Bentley Continental GT 4-door, but then realize there’s no way in hell they’d be driving it out in public for testing. As it gets closer, it pulls into the turning lane in front of me, and takes a left onto the street I’m stopped in front of, and holy shit it’s a new Rolls Royce Phantom.

While driving up Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, I’m stopped at a light somewhere near Erie. I look to my left and notice a green wedge slowing down dramatically as it nears the intersection, and as it gets closer I see it’s a lime green Lamborghini Murciélago.

So what cool cars have you stumbled upon?

I’ve stumbled on a similar Maserati in the Chicago area before. Two summers ago I averaged one Ferrari sighting every two days (I lived in Buffalo Grove, worked in Lake Bluff / Lake Forest).

A relative of mine actually has an Aston Martin Vanquish (sold his 360 Spider before he got it) and a Maybach 57 as the highlights of his wonderful collection of cars.

Earlier this month I saw a car at the Plaza in Kansas City with the neon underbody lights - normally something I’d frown upon. But these lights were attached to a DeLorean. That’s possibly the only car those lights look cool on, they were a match made in heaven.

I saw a DeLorean on my way to work (London) just the other day. How many of those were made/are on the road?

I saw a Bentley Continental GT in York, of all places, just last weekend.

Wow, another guy from Buffalo Grove! Nifty.

Anyways, in Buffalo Grove I’ve seen two Murcielago’s among numerous Testarosas. I’ve seen a Diablo a few years back as well, a rare find.

There was a dealer in my area (off of Milwaukee) that was selling a used Delorian.

Last summer I saw two brand new Bentleys.

Some guy parks a Z8 on the street in my urban neighborhood during the summer. For that, he is crazy. That said, it is the most beautiful and perfect car I have ever seen.

All my sightings are in and around Chicagoland..

Oi, well, I’ve seen a Lamborghini Diablo pulled over by cops on I-94 north, multiple Murcielago’s and Gallardos driving around downtown and followed a BMW Z8 for about 20 miles on I-90. And I’ve seen numerous Bentleys, Rolls, etc… just the normal stuff anyone sees when you live in a major metropolitan area. Hell, there’s a car dealer down by Water Tower Place in Chicago that has all kinds of swanky expensive-as-hell cars for sale. You can walk by their big floor to ceiling windows and drool at cars from Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari, etc. :)
I’ve also seen not one but two DeLoreans… there used to be one I would see parked at gas station for months in Skokie and then one parked at an mechanic’s way out in the suburbs of Chicago. AFAIK there were only around 8000 DeLorean’s built and estimates put the amount remaining at around 6000.

As a side note, years ago I ordered some genuine DeLorean “DMC” logo stickers that went on the side windows of DeLorean’s. I had a set of 4 so I put 2 on my old Celica. heh. Kinda lame but whatever. That DMC logo kicks ass.

The DeLorean in the lot on Milwaulkee might be the same one that sat “For Sale” on the side of Rt. 22 for a while two years back. Saw a Diablo a while back in BG as well, but none of the newer Lambos.

I saw a pre-production Maserati Quattroporte on the freeway once (many months before it came out for production). I was confused beyond confused… I saw a glimpse of the Maserati badge, but the back clearly wasn’t a Spyder, so I had no friggin’ clue what it was until I finally read about the Quattroporte in some magazine. I also saw a pre-production Chrysler 300C, but that’s not as exciting.

My cousin has a BMW Z8. Gorgeous car. Funny thing is, he doesn’t like to drive.

I believe I saw a Lamborghini Countach on the freeway when I was much younger, but the memory’s too blurry.

I saw a Delorean DMC a few months ago. Since I’d never seen one before (and never ever EXPECTED to see one), I couldn’t figure out what on earth it was until I saw the DMC logo on the front. From the back, it looks like some small, old Lamborghini.

I spotted my MR2 Spyder in my garage this morning! It’s Solar Yellow with the “chick magnet” option (that, of course, is me!).

*cough*

The other day I was driving east along Lake-Cook Rd. in Deerfield and passed a Bentley Continental GT going the other way. Then I thought I saw another one just a few cars back. But it turns out it was just a Chrysler 300 with a Bentley look-alike aftermarket grille.

A while back me and my girlfriend were walking down the street and happened to see a very sexy silver Lamborghini Diablo. It was beautiful.. And i doub’t i’ll ever see it again, because noone within 50 miles of me could afford a car like that. They must have been passing through..

Also, i seen a Ferarri Enzo and a Ferarri F355 crusing down Rodeo Drive in Hollywood/Beverly Hills. The guys in the F355 were taking pictures of the guy driving the Enzo. The sound of the Enzo is simply stunning… I love it.

This took place in the 80’s before the Monterey weekend became what it is. I lived 60 miles north of Monterey and it’s the Monday after the vintage races. I am on Hwy 101 at 8:00 am commuting to work and I see two red convertibles ahead of me, so I catch up to them and I am shocked to see a 212 barchetta and 1958 Tessta Rossa side by side. I followed them for 30 miles a commute I will never forget.
