FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIF., 05/30/2007 Hyundai Motor America today announced an industry first with its new Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty, boasting a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty on used vehicles going back five model years with less than 60,000 miles.
Though Hyundai has surprised many over the last few years with its aggressive pricing, warranty, and competitive features, it has not yet ventured into the sacrosanct territory that puts everyone on notice that you’ve “arrived” as an automaker and a brand. That’s right, a full-fledged luxury car. Granted, Hyundai has had the home-market Equus sedan, and offers the competitively-equipped and priced Azera sedan, but neither have stared Lexus, BMW, or Infiniti in the face and said, “It’s on!”
In my daily investigative online reading, I came across a story that almost seems too far-fetched to be true. Dealers across the country are literally selling out of a vehicle model. Certainly, this would be rare for any domestic automaker, except for brand-new, just-introduced models. What made the story even more remarkable, is that the vehicles that are flying off dealer lots faster than the factory can produce them is not an exotic sports car or headline-grabbing retro revival.
When I first became familiar with the car maker known as Hyundai, it
appeared to be more of a joke than an actual means of transportation.
I would most often encounter Hyundai cars as beat up wrecks
chugging through the car auctions I frequented. These cars were
often used up and worthless at far less than 100,000 miles, and in
some cases at less than 50,000 miles.
