In an interview yesterday, Renault and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn reported that talks with General Motors were “positive”.
There were few details. According to Business Week, Ghosn stated that it was still too early to tell what direction could the possible three-way alliance could go.
The automotive world was shocked back in July when GM shareholder Kirk Kerkorian announced about a possible merger between the three automakers. Many analysts wondered if Ghosn would replace current GM CEO Rick Wagoner in such a major event.
Since then, there’s been little news since Wagoner and Ghosn met in July. Speculation currently is that the automakers may be looking more towards an alliance than a merger, sharing technology and knowledge. Ghosn has firmly stated he has no interest in becoming the CEO of a third automaker.
The time is ticking, though, about the ultimate outcome between the companies. While much of the media continues to focus on troubled Ford Motor Co., no one has forgotten that Ghosn has set a mid-October deadline to make a decision about the alliance.
